Formed in 1986 in Toms River, New Jersey, Skid Row consisted of vocalist Sebastian Bach, guitarists Dave Sabino and Matt DeVito, bassist Jim Romanko, and drummer Rob Affuso. The band's early years were marked by relentless gigging and demo recordings, which eventually caught the attention of A&M Records. In 1989, Skid Row released their self-titled debut album, produced by Michael Cliff and the band.
