The Buena Vista Social Club film was born out of a collaboration between Wim Wenders and Cuban musician Ry Cooder. In the late 1990s, Wenders and Cooder traveled to Cuba to film a series of interviews with elderly Cuban musicians, many of whom had been forgotten by the Cuban government. These musicians, who had grown up in the 1920s and 1930s, had been influenced by American jazz and blues, and had developed a unique style of music that blended traditional Cuban rhythms with Western influences.
