The film’s resolution is famously ambiguous and, for some, unsatisfying. After the masked ball, Bill learns that the woman who saved him has been killed. He believes his actions have led to murder. He confesses everything to Alice, weeping, expecting a dramatic reckoning. But Alice, having already passed through her own crisis of desire, responds with a startlingly mature line: “No dream is ever just a dream.” She then suggests the only antidote to the chaos of fantasy: “There is something very important we need to do as soon as possible. Fuck.” Many critics have misinterpreted this as a simplistic call for marital sex. In truth, it is a profound acknowledgment that the only way to survive the terror of desire is to return to the physical, loving, real presence of another person. Bill spent the entire film searching for a phantom; Alice offers him flesh and blood.
