Canto yo y la montaña baila is also a novel about memory. Scenes of children playing with rusted bullets and old grenades are a poignant reminder of the Spanish Civil War, whose "La Retirada" (The Retreat) forms a historical backdrop. The land bears the literal and metaphorical scars of the past, and the novel asks us to consider how we live with, and pass on, these memories.
