: Download the PS3 4.88 firmware update from an official or trusted source. Place the .PUP file in the UPDATE folder.
On your computer, delete the 4.89 update file from your USB drive. Download the official or custom file.
This is the easiest path, but it requires that your PS3 is already running CFW, such as Evilnat 4.89.
Some can accept CFW, depending on their manufacture date and "minimum downgrade version."

Once QA Flags are enabled, you can proceed to the downgrade itself.
If your PS3 is on Official 4.89 (never hacked), you cannot downgrade via software. You must physically dump, patch, and re-flash the NOR/NAND chip.
