Understanding NewSID v4.10: The History, Myths, and Modern Alternatives

To safely alter a core cryptographic identifier, NewSID executed a rigorous structural update across the operating system:

The core reason for the retirement was Mark Russinovich's own blog post, "NewSID Retirement and the Machine SID Duplication Myth". In it, he concluded that the risk of duplicated computer SIDs was largely a myth and that most of the previously feared problems did not manifest in modern Windows environments. Consequently, Microsoft's official position is to only support images prepared using its own tool, (System Preparation Tool).

The official and removed by Microsoft from the active Sysinternals suite. Originally developed by Mark Russinovich, NewSID v4.10 was a widely used utility designed to change the Security Identifier (SID) on cloned Windows systems. However, because Microsoft officially supports only the Sysprep tool for system duplication and because the necessity of changing computer SIDs was later debunked as a myth, the tool was pulled from official availability.
