By early 2013, Sonny Moore—better known as Skrillex—was the undisputed global poster child of "brostep," a hyper-aggressive, mid-range-heavy subgenre of dubstep. He had swept the Grammys and filled stadiums with chaotic sonic energy. However, the Leaving EP caught the music world completely off guard by trading rowdy festival anthems for intimate, deeply emotional UK bass, ambient, and future garage influences.

The EP was initially made available exclusively to members of "The Nest," a subscription service from Skrillex's own OWSLA label.
