Gogol. A Terrible Vengeance successfully pulls off a difficult balancing act. It delivers a satisfying conclusion to a serialized mystery while honoring the literary giant who inspired it. By treating Nikolai Gogol's real-life anxieties, eccentricities, and literary themes as literal monsters to be fought, the filmmakers created a meta-narrative that is both intellectually stimulating and thoroughly entertaining.
The film begins with Gogol's resurrection from his grave by a mysterious benefactor.
