The collection is meticulously organized to guide the player through a progressive exploration of tonal possibilities.

Moyse was deeply influenced by the Bel Canto (beautiful singing) style of 19th-century Italian opera. He noticed that great opera singers achieved a seamless legato, rich vibrato, and dynamic variance without losing tone quality.
