As of late 2024, a third Sherlock Holmes film directed by Guy Ritchie (with Downey Jr. and Jude Law) is reportedly in pre-production. If and when that film releases, it is almost guaranteed to get a simultaneous Tamil dubbed release in Indian cinemas and on OTT.
One of the most significant homages in Tamil cinema is director Mysskin's 2017 film, (which translates to "Detective"). Starring Vishal and Prasanna, the film explicitly acknowledges its inspiration. Director Mysskin has openly stated, "My first literature book was a collection of Sherlock Holmes’ short stories. I was 12 then, and there was no stopping after that". The protagonist, Kaniyan Poongundran, is a brilliant but eccentric detective, accompanied by his friend Manohar, who serves as his Dr. Watson. This film, which follows the detective as he investigates the death of a child's pet dog, was a successful attempt to create a "Tamil Sherlock Holmes" and resonated strongly with audiences who had long admired the classic character.
