The transgender community has profoundly shaped global pop culture, language, and art. Much of modern slang, fashion, and performance styles originated within the Black and Latine transgender and queer ballroom subcultures of the late 20th century.

If you are a cisgender member of the LGBTQ community (meaning your gender identity aligns with the sex you were assigned at birth), the best way to celebrate our shared culture is to defend the trans community specifically.

Over a 18-month period ending in early 2025, anxiety symptoms among LGBTQ+ youth rose from 57% to 68%, depressive symptoms from 38% to 54%, and suicidal ideation from 41% to 47%. Transgender, non-binary, and gender-questioning youth consistently reported the poorest mental health outcomes and highest suicide risk. A full 90% of LGBTQ+ young people said that recent anti-trans laws and political debates have caused them significant stress or anxiety, highlighting the direct harm of hostile political rhetoric. The risk of suicide is so severe that research has found a direct link between the passage of anti-trans laws and a 72% increase in suicide attempts among trans and non-binary youth.
