Born into slavery in 1800, Nat Turner grew up in Southampton County, Virginia. He was deeply influenced by his Christian upbringing and became a preacher among his fellow enslaved individuals. However, as he grew older, Turner became increasingly frustrated with the brutal treatment of enslaved people and the injustices of the slave system.
Believing he was chosen by God after seeing visions in the sky—including spirits in battle and drops of blood on corn—Turner led a group of approximately 70 enslaved and free Black people in an uprising.
