The two musicians bonded over a shared love for aggressive, anti-establishment music—ranging from the crust punk of Doom and Discharge to the pioneering industrial assault of Ministry and Godflesh. Recording at Cavalera's home studio in Phoenix, Arizona, and later at Chipping Norton Studios in England, the duo set out to create an album that was deliberately unpolished, fiercely political, and sonicly devastating.
